Others
         were assigned to protect
             what would become Yosemite,
           Sequoia,
         and Kings Canyon National Parks.

     Although
          national parks
              did not yet formally exist,
       these soldiers
           worked
as our nation's first park rangers.

     Each day,
         they patrolled the grounds,
             made maps,
                  and helped build trails.

     They also enforced,
           or carried out,
                laws.
