They were often given
          older horses,
               little ammunition,
             and malfunctioning equipment.

     Most of their meals
         consisted primarily
             of boiled beef,
       hash,
           beans,
                and cornbread.

     Occasionally,
          they had sweet potatoes
             or a piece of fruit.

     Finally,
         they frequently faced
             discrimination
                  from their commanding officers
           and the civilians
               they encountered.
