Most of these volunteers

         were illiterate,

       and they hoped the Army

           would teach them

               to read and write.

     Others chose to enlist

         because they felt patriotic.

     Shortly after the war,

         the government

             passed

                  a constitutional amendment

           to officially abolish,

               or end,

                   slavery.
