They had never seen

          African American soldiers

              before,

       and the Native Americans

           were very impressed

                with their opponents' ability

                to fight.

     Some say the Cheyenne

         gave the nickname

              to the African American troops

                 out of respect.

     The buffalo

         was a sacred,

       or holy,

           animal

               to the Native Americans.
