They say

         the Native Americans

             saw the same fighting spirit

                  in the soldiers

       as they saw

          in the buffalo.

     Others believe

         the nickname was created

              because

            the soldiers' curly hair

               looked like the buffalo's mane.

     Even though the soldiers

          rarely used the name

               to describe themselves,

       they did take the nickname

          as a compliment.
